Manchester United should go all out to sign Luke Shaw

by Sam Peoples

Luke Shaw is one of the most promising young English players in the Premier League and the Southampton left-back has been hailed as a potential successor to Patrice Evra at Manchester United.

David Moyes’ pursuit of Leighton Baines shows he wants to buy a left back but Roberto Martinez has made it abundantly clear that Leighton Baines will not leave Everton so they are going to play hard ball again if Moyes comes back in for him. For me, Baines isn’t the right choice for United and there is no better player available in the Premier League than Shaw.

The 18-year-old has excelled since becoming Southampton’s first choice left back and has been heavily touted as Ashley Cole’s long term replacement but United should break the bank to try and tempt him to Old Trafford instead.

Moyes has reiterated on more than one occasion that the money is there if he wants to invest it, so if money is not the problem then we should move for Shaw. The fact that he is English and plays in the Premier League means there would immediately be a premium on his price tag.

Southampton would not be forced into a sale without a substantial bid given that Shaw signed a new contract in the summer and the club is performing well in the Premier League this year, but any player is for sale at the right place.

If Moyes was willing to pay around £15 million for 29-year-old Baines who would have to be replaced in three to four years time, then paying £25 million+ for Shaw would be great value given that he could potentially be our left back for over a decade.

Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney were both expensive players but they have given over 20 years to United between them, so their initial outlay was spread – the same could apply to Shaw.

United have always had English players as the spine of their team over the years and that isn’t going to change any time soon with the likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Danny Welbeck all set to be part of the new generation of United. Moyes should try his utmost to make Shaw one of those players.

Do you think Luke Shaw is the best choice left back for Manchester United to replace Patrice Evra?
