Manchester United told €18m will land them French playmaker in January

Montpellier boss Jean Fernandez has admitted that if Manchester United were to offer €18 million for Remy Cabella during the winter transfer window, the club could not refuse a bid like that.

The 23-year-old has been linked with a move to Old Trafford this week by various media outlets and Fernandez has responded to rumours in the press.

“He is an intelligent boy who will play for the season,” he is quoted as saying by Reuters.

“Now, if in the winter transfer window Manchester United gives €18 million as I’ve read, he must go.

“Though you ‘kill’ the team, you can not refuse.”

It is interesting that Fernandez has commented on the rumours. It shows United that while Montpellier may not be interested in selling Cabella, they are not adverse to the idea for the right price as is usually the case in football.

Cabella has spent his whole career, apart from one season away on loan, at Montpellier and is an integral player in their side but according to French football expert Tom Coast, who has regularly watched Cabella play, he is not the type of player that United should be looking to sign.

“I like Rémy Cabella but don’t think he’s ready for a club like Manchester United yet,” he said.

“He’s inconsistent and is an attacking midfielder equivalent of Nani. He’s capable of creating something out of nothing with an amazing Hollywood through ball or a little flick, but more often than not, he has the tendency to go missing.

“His last two Ligue 1 games are great examples of this – booed off the pitch after a poor performance in a goalless draw against Rennes followed by two goals and two assists in a 5-1 demolishing of out of form Lyon.

“Physically, he is very weak too. We’ve all witnessed how long it has taken Shinji Kagawa to adapt to the Premier League and get a first team spot at the club.

“Obviously this differs from player to player but Cabella isn’t half the player Kagawa was at Dortmund and chances are, he’d take a while to adjust to the English game.

“As well as all of this, Manchester United are not looking for an attacking midfielder. With Rooney in a great run of form and Kagawa on the bench, Cabella would struggle to play. Januzaj’s rise wouldn’t help his case either.

“He is capable of playing on the wing but if someone is going to replace the likes of Ashley Young or Valencia, I know we would all prefer it to be a proper winger rather than a makeshift one.”
