Hernandez admits he is desperate for a change to his situation at Manchester United

by Sam Peoples

Javier Hernandez has admitted he is desperate to be given another opportunity to start by David Moyes in order to prove himself.

The 25-year-old has only started three times this season as he is behind Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie in the pecking order but his winner against Stoke showed his worth to the team.

A squad is only as strong as its substitutes and Hernandez proves that but as potent as he is from the bench, the Mexican has called on Moyes to give him more chances to start.

“A lot of people say it is luck [scoring as a sub] while other people say it is through hard work,” he told MUTV after the game.

“Every player in the world wants to start but I will do my best whether I play for one or 90 minutes.

“I’m very respectful with my team-mates and the fans who all treat me very well.

“I am desperate to play for 90 minutes but that is a decision for the gaffer.

“I want to speak on the pitch, like I did today, and in the other games that I start.”

Hernandez has, up until this point, remained the perfect professional. Despite having the best goals-to-minute ratio at United last year, he remained happy to play when chosen but his form for Mexico has now suffered as a consequence of his minimal game time, something which has contributed to Mexico now having to win a play-off against New Zealand to qualify for the World Cup in Brazil.

Ferguson had two stand-out striking quartets in 1999 and 2008. He kept them happy by giving them all game time. Moyes has to make sure that he does the same with this current crop of strikers because if Hernandez wanted to leave, it would be a real blow for the strength of our squad.

Natural goalscorers like Hernandez are a rare breed and his transparently honest approach to football is infectiously likeable, we need to keep him in the squad for his ability on the pitch and his attitude off it.
