Manchester United midfielder Nick Powell will spend the season on loan with Wigan Athletic after it was confirmed by Wigan chairman Dave Whelan.
The young England midfielder has struggled to push himself into a first team place at Old Trafford despite being a regular for the U21 side for club and country.
Powell will gain the invaluable experience of European football because of Wigan’s involvement in the Europa League this year having won the FA Cup in 2012.
Speaking about the deal, Whelan said: “We obviously had Tom Cleverley on loan and I think United were happy with the job we did with him, so it’s good news that we’ve got the lad.”
“We’ve done the deal for a season long loan.”
The 19-year-old had a good start to his United career when he scored a 20 yard beauty against none other than Wigan.
After a series of injuries that saw him miss out on chances near the end of the season, his return saw him score a goal with the U21s and his loan to Wigan should be able to help him fight for a place in the starting line-up upon return.
