Marca claim Falcao on his way to Manchester United

by Tom Parker

marcaDespite widespread speculation that Atletico Madrid forward Falcao is destined for a move to either Manchester City or Chelsea in the close season, Spanish newspaper Marca are tonight reporting that the Colombian hitman could be on his way to Manchester United.

The 27-year-old striker has been in fantastic form this season with only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo outscoring him domestically.

Falcao is represented by super agent Jorge Mendes who was involved in deals bringing Anderson, Nani and Cristiano Ronaldo to United, and reported target Ezequiel Garay also linked up with Mendes’ agency apparently in a bid to broker a move to Old Trafford.

The former River Plate man would not come cheap with a fee of €55 million being quoted.

The full story will be released tomorrow but the back page has been taken from the verified Twitter account bearing the words: “Falcao on his way to United.”

But the historical pro-Madrid leanings of Marca with the derby against Atletico only two weeks away suggest that this may well be a simple fabrication.

If a move were to materialise, it would certainly be a surprising one with United hardly lacking in the goalscoring department this campaign and with Falcao’s preference of playing in a 4-3-3 system, a deal does not appear to suit either party particularly well.

According to Marca, a part-exchange deal including Hernandez going the other way has been rejected in favour of a straight cash deal.

More will be revealed in the morning edition of the paper. It would certainly be a surprise to see Falcao join United but few predicted the purchase of Robin Van Persie last summer.

UPDATE: Marca have now published the full story here which reports that according to sources close to both parties, a down payment has already been made between both clubs.

And the newspaper edition of the story suggests that Atletico were getting frustrated in negotiations with Chelsea due to the uncertainties with who was going to be manager next season.

They raise a good point in that the transfer of De Gea was calculated in a similar fashion when Ferguson admitted that United had already wrapped up the deal a long time before it was finally announced.
