Marco Reus’ move to Manchester United can definitely happen

by Sam Peoples

Marco Reus has been linked with a move to Manchester United this week in both The Independent and Daily Mail.

The 24-year-old is considered one of the finest players in the Bundesliga and would be a brilliant addition to David Moyes’ side but many see it as nothing more than fantasy that he could move to Old Trafford. I see it differently.

Borussia Dortmund have made it clear that Reus has a release clause in his contract in the region of £30 million. It is strange that they went public with the news Reus had a release clause as surely it was in their best interest for it to not be public knowledge?

Reports suggest that the release clause doesn’t come into effect until 2015 but much like they were powerless to stop Mario Gotze leaving for Bayern Munich when they matched his release clause, a similar scenario could happen with Reus.

However, the main reason is that there has been a changing of the guard in the Bundesliga that Dortmund have been on the wrong end of.

Dortmund won back to back league titles between 2010-2012 but Bayern Munich won the treble last year and their resurgence looks like the beginning of another period of dominance in Germany for them.

Instead of resting on their laurels after the treble, they brought in one of the most successful managers of the past decade in Pep Guardiola alongside world class players such as Mario Gotze and Thiago Alcantara.

The buck doesn’t stop there either as Robert Lewandowski is likely to move to Munich in the summer too meaning that in Gotze and Lewandowski, Munich would have bought two of Dortmund’s best players from the past few years.

Dortmund were the force to be reckoned with a couple of years ago but they aren’t any more. They are languishing 12 points behind Munich and are closer to the bottom half of the table than the top. United find themselves in a similar situation right now but we always bounce back from adversity and Dortmund’s previous financial struggles have seen them forced to sell their stars.

Shinji Kagawa, Nuri Sahin (in his prime), Mario Gotze and (soon to be) Robert Lewandowski. Dortmund have a recent track record of selling and replacing their top players.

Reus would be an ideal signing given his ability to play across the front three in attack. Of course, this isn’t to say that Reus is going to move to United. He spent his youth with Dortmund and has long standing ties with the club that run deeper than most which could see him stay there but so did Gotze – he left. Stranger things have happened in football.
