Mata tells Mourinho ‘I’m really happy to go to Manchester United’

by Sam Peoples

Jose Mourinho has admitted that Juan Mata told him he was ‘really happy to go’ when informed of the offer from Manchester United.

The 25-year-old will complete his move to Old Trafford this weekend when he passes a medicalĀ and will become our record signing when it is made official.

On paper, it still doesn’t make much sense to United fans that Mourinho was willing to sell us one of Chelsea’s best players but we’ll gladly welcome Mata with open arms, especially after he admitted that he was happy to move to United.

“We allowed Juan to travel and have a medical at Manchester United,” he said at a press conference yesterday.

“Sooner rather than later things will be finalised.

“I asked him when the offer came: ‘Are you really happy to go?’ He said ‘I’m really happy to go’

“He is a fantastic player. In spite of not playing much for us, I still think he could have been important for us. It’s a good move for Juan, it’s good for the Premier League and the offer is the right offer.

“With the two deals, Juan and Kevin de Bruyne, we put ourselves in a very good position in relation to financial fair play.”

Mata didn’t need to do anything to endear himself to United fans but telling Mourinho he would be happy to join us will certainly make even more of a fans’ favourite.

Mourinho went even further by wishing Mata the very best in hoping that he does well at United in what was a very respectful farewell from Mourinho to the departing Mata.

He added:Ā “Many clubs, managers, boards feel you don’t sell to a rival club, we feel and we think different,ā€ he added.

ā€œWe are not afraid of him doing well at Man United, we want him to be happy and do well at Man United.

“He was fantastic for Chelsea, and Chelsea were fantastic for him. When he comes back to Stamford Bridge with a Man United shirt on, for sure we will show how much we respect him

“We feel mixed emotions… we are all sad and I think with him it was a bit the same.”

It was very short-term of Chelsea to sell us Mata if they didn’t consider us title challengers this year because Mata’s arrival means that our season starts now.

If the squad we now have at our disposal stays fit, it would be a surprise if we didn’t finish in the top four because the whole team will get such a massive lift thanks to Mata.
