Mata latest -Talks progressing quickly, agent flies to England and £40m deal lined up

by Sam Peoples

Juan Mata’s potential move to Manchester United has exploded in the past 12 hours following The Telegraph Sport front page yesterday splash that we were in for the playmaker.

Tonight, ESPN and Sky Sports have reported that talks are progressing well, The Guardian have said that Mata must tell Mourinho he wants a move to Old Trafford and The Independent believe that Chelsea are prepared to sell Mata to United, but that Jose Mourinho would still need to agree on a deal (since when did Abramovich ever let Mourinho have that sort of power?)

As well as reports from England, MARCA suggest Mata’s representatives flew over to London today because they want his situation to be resolved as soon as possible, and Sky Bet have installed United as the favourites to sign Mata. Everything is moving at the speed of light with this Mata situation.

In case you wanted to know what Guilleme Balague had to say on the matter, he said: “Manchester United and Chelsea are negotiating the future of Juan Mata – and the idea is that Mata, who Chelsea are happy to let go, goes to Old Trafford in this transfer window.

“Chelsea are asking for £32 million or with Wayne Rooney as part of the deal. Manchester United have said no to the money and no to Rooney – but I am under the impression that a deal will be reached because it benefits everybody.

“Manchester United need quality, Mata needs to get out of the situation he is in, and it would reinforce United for their meetings with (Chelsea’s title rivals) Manchester City and Arsenal, which is clever from Jose Mourinho.”

Would Mourinho really sell United one of their best players even if he isn’t part of his own plans? Everywhere is suggesting that might be the case because it would in turn help Chelsea as they don’t see us as title rivals this year.

Of course, Chelsea’s books will likely need balancing for the FFP rules and there are rumblings that Mata’s situation is causing issues behind the scenes at Stamford Bridge, so there may be other pressures to sell Mata. Howeve, the biggest pressure of all would be from Mata himself who, if he put in a transfer request, could make this snowball even faster.

It’s highly unusual for every major media agency to run with the same story along the same lines and either they have all had the wool pulled over their eyes or Mata to United might genuinely happen.
