Mata: United is a massive club and I’m happy to be here

by Sam Peoples

Juan Mata couldn’t wipe the smile off his face when he was officially unveiled as a Manchester United player this afternoon alongside David Moyes.

The 25-year-old was questioned by reporters at his first press conference on why he joined United, what it meant to him and what he was looking forward and there was one buzzword from Mata that kept cropping up – massive.

“Coming here is a great moment for me and I am very happy to get the chance to play for a massive club like Manchester United,” he said.

Mata was very well spoken and articulate throughout and he did well to avoid traps laid down by reporters who were willing him into saying that United were a bigger club than Chelsea, but he did not shy away from calling United a massive club in the slightest and pointed towards United’s history as something that drew him to Old Trafford.

He added: “The history of the club and players they have in the squad are top players. The welcome was unbelievable for me.”

Mata will go straight into the squad for our game against Cardiff tomorrow and all things considered, his arrival could mark a seismic shift in United’s fortunes this season. Welcome to United, Juan.
