Moyes left with less options after Coentrao signs improved Madrid contract

by Sam Peoples

Fabio Coentrao has signed a one year contract extension with Real Madrid that will keep him in the Santiago Bernabeu until 2018 according to AS.

The 25-year-old has reportedly secured a more lucrative contract as well as an extension on his current deal that was originally due to expire in 2017.

It comes as a bit of a surprise given that Coentrao was so close to signing for Manchester United on deadline day, a move that was only foiled by Madrid’s failure to land an adequate replacement, as Madrid seemed more than happy to let him leave only a few month ago. However, they have moved to keep him in Spain now.

Coentrao is currently sidelined after he injured his ankle against Rayo Vallecano and isn’t expected to be back in action until the new year but he has been very much in and out of the side this season under Carlo Ancelotti.

Marcelo is the undisputed No. 1 choice at left back so it seems that Coentrao is happy to fight the Brazilian rather than seek a move away for more first team football.

Coentrao’s style of playing more as a wing back suited Moyes’ desire for United’s left back to provide width to an attack but his new deal means that Moyes will have to look elsewhere for a left back signing.
