Manchester United’s Chris Smalling ‘absolutely gutted’ after Chelsea defeat

by Sam Peoples

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling was “absolutely gutted” to lose to Chelsea on Saturday but thanked fans for their support at Stamford Bridge.

Louis van Gaal’s side can count themselves very unlucky not to take anything away from the match as they were excellent from the first whistle.

Unfortunately, United could not quite fashion themselves any real goalscoring opportunities against a resolute Chelsea defence.

It was a frustrating result given the performance and Smalling believes United deserved more from the match:

Despite the defeat, there were a number of positives for van Gaal and United to take back to Manchester.

Luke Shaw was thrown in at the deep end after Daley Blind was ruled out of the clash through injury but the youngster put in a superb shift down United’s left flank. As well as Shaw, Paddy McNair can be proud of his display.

It goes to show that United are very close to being a team which can challenge for the Premier League title. With a fully fit squad and a few good signings in the summer, fans will be confident of a memorable campaign under van Gaal.
