Michael Carrick a ‘major doubt’ for Everton game

by Sam Peoples

Michael Carrick is a ‘major injury doubt’ for Manchester United’s trip to play Everton this weekend, reports Mark Ogden from The Telegraph.

While Carrick is a doubt, the injured trio of Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones are all expected to be fit for Everton away.

The 33-year-old missed Man United’s game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and his absence was compounded by a late injury to Blind which saw Wayne Rooney drop into midfield to cover the absent duo.

Fans are very keen to get Carrick back into the starting XI as soon as possible but Ogden suggests the Everton game will come too soon for him to return which would be a major blow for Louis van Gaal given how influential he had been to United’s great form.

It won’t be as substantial a blow for United if Blind is passed fit for the game but there is no guarantee of that either at this stage despite initial reports saying he should be fit.

United don’t have the squad depth right now to replace Blind and Carrick in the starting XI which is why Rooney had to drop deeper to cover but that move hindered both his ability and United’s threat in attack. It ruined a pattern of form but luckily it didn’t do anything to dent the confidence.

Louis van Gaal went as far as to say the defeat to Chelsea was the best United had played all season and whether or not that was simply mind games, it was indicative of how much confidence United took from outplaying the champions elect.
