Wayne Rooney is going nowhere

Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton has hit out at recent speculation stating that star striker Wayne Rooney is set to leave the club.

Speaking in Rio De Janeiro ahead of Monday’s Laureus World Sports Awards, Charlton classed the rumours as “a bit premature.”

Speculation has being flying about all over the sporting world that Rooney will seek a move to another club after he was dropped to the bench for the second leg of United’s last 16 Champions League tie against Real Madrid.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Charlton believes there’s more too the story than what the public sees. “Wayne Rooney maybe has had an injury and has not performed as well as he might have done, but that doesn’t mean to say that you get rid of him” he said.

Sir Bobby is most famously known for leading United through the 1960’s after surviving the Munich Air Disaster and he now holds the position as one of the clubs directors. “I don’t know everything that happens at Manchester United but I know a little” Sir Bobby emphasises.

“Sir Alex Ferguson came out and said he had no intention of letting Wayne Rooney go anywhere. You have to abide by that and I believe it, 100%. He is a great player so why would you get rid of a great player?”

Rooney has been strongly linked to the European elite with Bayern Munich paying extra attention to the former Evertonian wonderkid. This speculation has being fuelled by Bayern’s president, Franz Beckenbauer, after he admitted that he’d be happy to have Rooney at the Allianz Arena.

“I would be very, very happy if Wayne Rooney decided to come to Bayern Munich” he said. “But is this a rumour or is it true? I don’t know.”

So despite the strong rumours of Rooney leaving the Red Devils, United are keen to keep Rooney who still has two years left on his current contract. The 28-year-old, even with all his injury troubles, is still on course to score 20 goals – not exactly a bad return given the stop-start season he has had.

With 196 goals to his name, he is closing in on Sir Bobby Charlton’s all-time goalscoring recrord at Manchester United of 249 and with plenty of years left in his career, Rooney certainly has the time to become Manchester United’s all-time leading goalscorer.
