Gareth Southgate provides hugely positive injury update on Luke Shaw ahead of Euro 2024

by Derick Kinoti

England boss Gareth Southgate has given an encouraging injury update on Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw with just two weeks left until Euro 2024 kicks off.

Shaw endured an injury-ridden 2023/24 season that saw him make only 12 appearances in the Premier League and 15 across all competitions.

His absence was made even worse by the fact that his deputy, Tyrell Malacia, was also sidelined with a long-term issue of his own. Malacia did not get any taste of action last term because his rehabilitation suffered multiple setbacks.

Despite his fitness struggles, Shaw was still included in Southgate’s 33-man provisional squad.

When naming the players called up, Southgate explained that Shaw was facing an uphill battle to fully recover and become available for selection during the tournament in Germany.

The Three Lions boss spoke to the media on Sunday and indicated that the United defender now has a “good chance” of making Euro 2024.

Southgate said about the 28-year-old star, “He’s progressing very well, I have to say.”

“I think I said last week that until we had the players in front of us working with us, there was a lot of information that we didn’t have.”

“We’re pleased with how he’s progressing. There’s still a bit to do before he can get on the pitch in a game situation.”

“But really pleased with the work he’s doing with our physical performance team and our medics, so, yeah, he’s in with a good chance.”

Shaw is not expected to feature in either of England’s upcoming friendlies against Bosnia & Herzegovina and Iceland.

No doubt the United man will be eyeing a return to action when the national team face Serbia in their opening group stage clash of the Euro 2024 on June 16.
