Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes produced a record-breaking performance to guide his side to a 3-1 victory over Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon.

Back to winning ways

A brilliant team display saw United overcome Unai Emery’s men, consolidating third spot and edging nearer to a Champions League return.

United broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute through Casemiro, who towered the highest to head home a sublime corner-kick delivery from Fernandes.

But United’s advantage didn’t last for too long. The Red Devils were pegged back shortly after the hour mark when their failure to clear their lines saw an unmarked Ross Barkley fire past Senne Lammens to make it 1-1.

United rallied together and mounted an all-out assault on Villa, with Fernandes leading the charge. The skipper came up with a moment of magic, picking out Matheus Cunha’s brilliant run and inviting the Brazilian to run up the pitch and apply a brilliant finish to restore the advantage.

Substitute Benjamin Sesko sealed the victory with a fantastic pivot and smash.

United remain in third place, three points above Villa and seven below Manchester City in second. While he didn’t get on the score sheet, Fernandes was the heartbeat of United’s superb display.

Fernandes’ display

Fernandes assist for Casemiro saw him equal David Becham for the most assists by a United player (15) in a Premier League season.

Beckham achieved this feat in the 1999/2000 campaign.

Fernandes did one better, surpassing the club icon with his second assist of the game for Cunha. He has now set a United record and has also now registered 100 assists in the famous red colours.

Beyond his two assists, Fernandes completed 100% of his take-ons. He managed an impressive 86% individual pass accuracy and touched the ball 71 times. Eight of his passes were delivered into the final third.

The Portugal international contributed nine defensive actions and made six ball recoveries over the course of the game.

He carved out six chances for his teammates and registered three shots on target, forcing Emi Martinez into action. Two of those opportunities created were clear-cut big chances.
