Benjamin Sesko: National team boss explains fury at Man United’s handling of striker

Benjamin Sesko has enjoyed an excellent debut season.

For a striker whom some were quick to label as another big-money flop, the Slovenian hitman has truly silenced his critics.

In 30 league games, with just 17 starts, the £74 million summer 2025 signing managed to score 11 goals and provide one assist.

For a player arriving in a new league under immense pressure, at a club demanding immediate results, Sesko has performed well.

It is also worth noting that he could have achieved even better statistics; most of his goals came at the turn of the year, and had he not missed the last three games, he would likely have recorded higher numbers.

Indeed, in 2026, Sesko was in outstanding form; he found his feet in United colours, scoring 10 goals during this period.

His brilliance in recent months has even left his national team boss somewhat envious that he never had the opportunity to use him.

Benjamin Sesko handling has frustrated national team boss

Slovenian national team boss Bostjan Cesar is frustrated that he could not rely on Sesko for the March international break due to injury, yet the striker continued to play for United.

In Cesar’s view, playing on only worsened the issue, culminating in a collision with the hoardings following a push from Ibrahima Konate in United’s 3-2 win over Liverpool, which has ruled the striker out since.

In a rant, as per The Daily Mail, the coach pointed out:

“He missed the last assembly in March, and then I kind of wanted him to be absent from United for a while, but then he came back quickly, and I don’t think he missed a game for the club.”

And while Sesko could have joined the Slovenian camp for the upcoming friendlies against Cyprus and Croatia, he will not feature, with Cesar adding:

“But if a player hasn’t been in a competitive rhythm for a month, then I don’t see the point in him coming and playing at half-strength.”

It is unfortunate for Slovenia that they cannot call upon Sesko for those fixtures.

Fitness boost for Man United

For United, the hope is that the extra rest will help the striker recover fully and return fit and available when pre-season kicks off in early July.

Given the glimpse he provided this season while leading United’s attack, some will expect films to be made of his performances next season.

With United’s thirst for glory and the demand to compete on multiple fronts, a Sesko firing on all cylinders is exactly what they need.
