A Manchester United exit could be on the cards for James Overy, with two potential destinations likely, a new report has claimed.
Rise
Overy’s move to United in 2024 came on the back of a reputation as one of the most exciting prospects to emerge from Australian youth football in recent years.
A product of Perth Glory’s youth system, he was thrown in at the deep end aged just 15 when he lined up against West Ham in 2023. The teenager rose to the occasion, and his display against senior opposition was enough to catch the attention of United’s scouting network.
Overy initially joined non-league outfit Newton Abbot Spurs before United swooped in and secured his signature.
He has progressed through the ranks at Carrington, featuring regularly for the club’s youth sides. Last season, Overy made 21 appearances in the U18 Premier League.
He also featured in the Premier League, FA Youth Cup, National League Cup and Premier League International Cup.
While he has yet to make his senior debut, Overy has trained multiple times with the first team, highlighting just how highly he is rated at Old Trafford.
At international level, too, he has made significant headway, earning recognition from Tony Popovic, though he was ultimately left out of Australia’s World Cup plans.
Now, the Daily Mail report that there is a chance that Overy leaves United this summer.
Overy update
According to Nathan Salt, “A nugget of information from academy circles: there is A-League interest from Australia in rising star full-back James Overy, while Rangers are also monitoring him.”
“One to watch.”
It is not yet known whether the interest is for a loan or a permanent deal. Even less certain is United’s stance on a potential exit, and whether Overy would be receptive to the idea himself.
However, he is likely to jump at the opportunity to play regularly, preferably in Europe where more eyes will be on him.
