Manchester United are about to receive an unexpected transfer boost, given what is now being reported about Willy Kambwala.
In the summer of 2024, former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag sanctioned the young defender’s Old Trafford exit. It was clear that the academy graduate did not feature in the Dutch tactician’s plans, so United allowed him to leave.
Villarreal then stepped forward, and a package potentially rising to £9.68 million convinced United to sanction the transfer.
However, before agreeing to Kambwala’s move to La Cerámica, the Red Devils wisely inserted two clauses into the deal: a buy-back option and a sizeable share of any sell-on fee.
Battle for Kambwala’s services
Two years later, that sell-on clause is about to come in handy for the 20-time English champions.
Kambwala is now poised to leave Villarreal. Osasuna believed they had already secured his signature, but according to transfer guru Matteo Moretto, that deal is about to be hijacked:
“Como, unexpectedly, has entered the race in recent hours for Willy Kambwala of Villarreal, who had already verbally agreed almost everything with Osasuna, and could snatch the signing away.”
Boost for Man United’s transfer kitty
Whether he joins Como or Osasuna, what will matter for United is their sizeable sell-on clause.
With transfer deadline day fast approaching, there are things INEOS need to address for Michael Carrick to have a strong squad for the season.
A Carlos Baleba transfer agreement with Brighton & Hove Albion is anticipated, after United opted to return for the deal.
And once the Baleba deal is struck, a move for a left-back is expected to follow.
Whatever remains of the Red Devils’ transfer budget, combined with the Kambwala windfall and any further sales, should boost United’s spending power and help them land that decent left-back, rounding off a 10 out of 10 transfer window.
