Manchester United beat Brentford 2-1 to edge closer to securing Champions League football. Here are our player ratings from the game.
(A score of 6 is around average)
Senne Lammens 9 – His impact was just as instrumental as the goals. Made a string of excellent match-winning saves while Brentford were in the ascendancy. Thwarted Igor Thiago multiple times and also kept out an effort from Michael Kayode. Deserved to keep a clean sheet.
Diogo Dalot 6 – A shaky start but he recovered and enjoyed a solid game against Brentford, who constantly attacked down his channel.
Harry Maguire 8 – Warrior! Assisted the opener. Got his head to everything and won all his duels against a physical and tricky Brentford side. Made a crucial block in the second half, which came at some personal expense as he was whacked on the head. Almost flawless on his return to the starting XI.
Ayden Heaven 7.5 – Another exceptional performance. Formed an excellent partnership with Maguire, displayed top-class ability on the ball and pushed forward when the chance came.
Luke Shaw 7 – A number of important interceptions and tackles. Did well after being booked early on. Had to come off with an injury. Hopefully, it’s not too serious and he is back for the next game.
Casemiro 8.5 – Outstanding finish to break the deadlock. His ninth of the season. His influence stretched well beyond the goal. The midfielder added both solidity and steel, playing a key role in keeping United’s backline largely untroubled by the Bees. Won some crucial fouls towards the end to get United over the line.
Kobbie Mainoo 8.5 – Midfield masterclass! Set the tone from the start with a breathtaking run that should have resulted in an assist. Delivered with trademark brilliance on the ball but perhaps the most impressive aspect of his game was just how relentless he was out of possession. He won the ball back numerous times and more than showed himself physically. Sky is the limit.
Bruno Fernandes 7 – At the heart of United’s attacking forays. Created United’s second goal of the game to make it 19 assists – just one shy of matching the Premier League record, which is currently held jointly by Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry.
Bryan Mbeumo 3 – Another day to forget. Nothing stuck up front. Heavy touches let him down, and he struggled against his former teammates.
Amad 4 – He was rightly withdrawn at the interval. After squandering at least two excellent goalscoring opportunities, he simply never looked at ease operating from an unfamiliar left-wing position.
Benjamin Sesko 7 – Excellent footwork and finish to double United’s advantage.
Substitutes
Noussair Mazraoui 6 – Helped neutralise whatever threat Brentford posed.
Mason Mount 6 – Energetic and bright when he came on for Amad.
Leny Yoro 5 – Just OK.
Joshua Zirkzee 5 – On for the dying embers of the game.
