Manchester United Women had a difficult end to the season.
Rollercoaster campaign
The Red Devils started the season strongly and reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League, narrowly losing out to Bayern Munich.
They also reached their first ever League Cup final, but were beaten by Chelsea.
Marc Skinner’s side finished the season in terrible form, winning just one out of their last ten matches. Serious questions have been raised over the manager’s future.
Exit rumours
If Manchester United Women are to return to Europe next season and challenge for trophies, they need to strengthen their squad. They seem on the cusp of completing a deal for Spanish full-back Andrea Medina.
Nonetheless, there have been some worrying rumours regarding the futures of certain key players.
It has been reported that United would consider selling Norwegian striker Elisabeth Terland this summer window.
There were also reports yesterday that the club have received two bids for star striker Melvine Malard from the United States.
Ella Toone
To add even more worries for United fans, The Guardian carries comments from Ella Toone putting into question her future at the club.
She has played 213 times for the club since joining in their inaugural season in 2018 and has scored 64 goals.
In spite of this, her influence on the team has diminished lately, with Jess Park becoming the new catalyst of the side.
Toone’s season was blighted by injury and she scored just three goals in 25 matches in the last season.
Speaking whilst on international duty for England, she claimed, “I have a year left. Obviously it’s now time to talk. I just know I have got to make a decision on what’s best for me. I’m at England right now and focusing on two big games coming up – Spain and Ukraine. Then I’ve got a summer off; I’m getting married and going on a hen do. I’m going to enjoy these things. And then I’m going to get my head screwed on, work hard in pre-season and go from there. Right now, I’m a Manchester United player.”
Commenting on the club’s season she said, “we had a very good run in the Champions League, for our first time being in it as well. We should be really proud of how far we went in that competition. Then on the other side, we want to be winning trophies, we want to be competing for the league, and I feel like there were parts of this season where we dropped points that we probably shouldn’t have, so there’s a lot to work on.”
