Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has seemingly joined growing calls for the club’s ownership group to adopt a more active approach in the market, with the new season about to commence.
Inactivity
Since announcing the arrivals of Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Karl Darlow last month, United have been very quiet in the market.
Reports continue to swirl that United are on the hunt for a third midfield signing, a left-back and potentially a striker if Joshua Zirkzee leaves, but there is very little evidence to suggest that they are making any concrete moves.
Last week, Michael Carrick stressed that United are in need of reinforcements. It’s been suggested that United have deliberately adopted a slower tempo in the transfer market, using the pre-season period to assess their requirements before taking further action.
But the sense of tension from the fanbase is palpable ahead of Saturday’s Premier League opener against Hull City.
Maguire spoke to Sky Sports and made it clear that he is “greedy” to win the biggest trophies and to achieve that, United need a deeper squad, even though it may prove to be a threat to his status as a regular starter.
Maguire’s plea
The England international told Sky Sports, “When you play for this club, you want competition for places and it’s so important that we have a huge squad.”
“I’m at an age now where they can bring in as many as they want, bring in all the best players. I want to win all the trophies and be greedy about it, but it’s up to the club.”
He added, “I’m sure they’re working hard out there to try and bring in the right players. The more, the merrier. The stronger squad that we have, the more opportunity we have of winning these trophies and that’s what it’s all about when you play for this club.”
“We’ve got a good depth of squad, they’re working hard on helping us and bringing more in.”
“We want to improve on last season. Everyone wants to win the Premier League, that is going to be our aim, that’s what this club demands. We have the belief we can be really competitive and we can beat anyone on our day. It’s going to be an exciting season.”
Maguire branded the current group of players as one of the closest he has ever been a part of since joining from Leicester City in 2019.
