Manchester United are not actively looking for a new central defender this summer, and Ayden Heaven could be the reason behind that decision. The Red Devils struggled to keep out goals in recent seasons, but have displayed improvement since the arrival of Michael Carrick in January this year.
The Englishman’s predecessor, Ruben Amorim, tried to implement a 3-4-3 system at Old Trafford without much success. The Portuguese head coach lost his job in January and Carrick, who initially took charge as a caretaker manager, immediately switched to a 4-2-3-1 formation.
United looked more solid at the back in the second half of the season, and secured third place in the Premier League. However, with Harry Maguire on the wrong side of 30 and Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt struggling to stay fit, there remain a few defensive concerns ahead of the new season.
Thankfully, United have both Leny Yoro and Heaven in the squad, ready to take the next step. The Englishman, meanwhile, was particularly impressive in pre-season.
United have a winner in Heaven
United managed a coup by securing the signature of Heaven from Arsenal in January 2025 for a nominal fee. The teenager, who had already made his senior debut for the Gunners, was immediately drafted into the first team.
The Englishman has developed in leaps and bounds so far, with his pace, technical ability and calmness standing out. The left-footed central defender was a regular feature under Amorim and Carrick last season, registering 17 appearances in the Premier League, 11 of which were starts.

Heaven particularly stood out in the 1-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in April. With Maguire and Martinez suspended and De Ligt also unavailable due to injury, the Englishman partnered Noussair Mazraoui at the back and managed to keep the Blues at bay.
The 19 year old’s performances have earned him a sizeable fan following. United legend Wayne Rooney has now provided his opinion on the player.
Rooney praises Heaven
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Rooney urged Carrick to play Heaven regularly this season. He said: “Ayden Heaven is going to have a fantastic season. I hope Carrick plays him. He is a young centre-back. He is composed on the ball and has got pace.”
Wazza acknowledged that the teenager is not the finished article yet, but argued that playing alongside Maguire could make him better. He continued: “Heaven puts in rash tackles at times but if he plays next to Harry Maguire, he can help him with his experience.”
“I really like the way he takes the ball and passes through the lines and has got so much potential.”
Final Thoughts
With United set to fight on four fronts in the 2026/27 season, Heaven is likely to get ample chances to stake a claim for a permanent place in the starting XI. The Englishman could even turn out to be a long-term successor to Lisandro Martinez at the Theatre of Dreams.
The Argentine remains crucial to the Red Devils’ plans, but his contract expires at the end of this season and he is yet to sign a new deal.
