Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw is coming off a spectacular campaign with the club. The Englishman started all 38 games in the Premier League for the first time in his career, becoming only the fifth player to achieve that feat for the Red Devils since the inception of the league.

Shaw arrived at Old Trafford as one of the brightest young full-backs in the summer of 2014. Unfortunately, the Englishman’s time at the Theatre of Dreams has been marred by injuries, although he has managed 325 appearances for the Premier League giants so far.
The 31 year old is looking ahead to his 13th season in the Premier League now, and recently sat down with the club’s media to preview the upcoming campaign.
The best United squad during Shaw’s stay
Speaking to MUTV, Shaw insisted that he is feeling really positive about the new season and hailed the current squad as the most talented during his time at Old Trafford. He said: “I think you always have the same feeling. Every year is the same.”
“There is always the same hunger, the same excitement every pre-season but, you know, I feel really, really positive about this season – with the group, with the manager. You know, the way things are around the place. Everyone is extremely positive, so I’m really looking forward to this season.”
“I think it’s 100 per cent true [that the mood in the camp is among the best I’ve known here]. Of course, like you have said, I have been in there for a long time now. So I’ve experienced different groups, different atmospheres but I would certainly say this is the most positive, happiest and probably talented group that we’ve had.”
On mentoring the young guns
Shaw is the longest-serving player at Old Trafford, and is using his experience to help new recruits and youngsters settle at the club. Shedding light on that responsibility, the Englishman said: “Definitely, look I’ve got so much experience, from being at this club for so long. For me, the biggest club in the world and I think, you know, sometimes coming to this club, it’s not always as easy as you think.”
“And, of course, for me, I’ve experienced it all and I’ve been through a lot of things here. Ups and downs. So I’ve learnt a lot and, for me, it’s about giving my experiences to them and helping them to adapt to this club quickly.”
“The players that have come in so far, they’ve fitted into the group really well. They bring really good energy, not just on the pitch but off the pitch. They’ve been great around the lads and really settled in quickly and, you know, for us that’s always important, to make them feel at home. They’re really good additions to the group.”
Looking ahead to creating history
As things stand, Shaw is also the longest serving player in England’s top flight across consecutive seasons following the departure of Seamus Coleman from Everton. Only Brighton & Hove Albion defender Lewis Dunk and Bournemouth’s Adam Smith have been at their respective clubs longer than the United man.
However, the duo have had spells away from the Premier League during their respective time at their clubs. That means that Shaw will become the first player to have featured in every season in the top tier of English football since the 2014/15 season.
Discussing the matter, Shaw said: “That’s nice, I didn’t know that. Yeah, that’s very special to be honest. I feel extremely privileged to have been here for so long. It’s kind of like home really. So, yeah hopefully, I can continue that and have a good season this season.”
Final Thoughts
Shaw’s contract expires in just under a year, and recent reports suggest that United are already laying down succession plans for the left-back position. However, as the Englishman has shown last season, he could still prove to be a vital first team member this campaign, so a renewal cannot be entirely ruled out.
