Manchester United star Patrick Dorgu produced an underwhelming performance as he and his teammates slipped to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Hull City in their 2026/27 season opener.
Poor
To describe United’s performance as merely poor would be inadequate; they were decidedly off the pace throughout.
Going away to a newly promoted side on the opening day of the season would have never been easy by any stretch of the imagination, but Michael Carrick’s men never truly got going.
United struggled with Hull’s physicality and intensity. Hull’s perseverance paid off in the 17th minute through Samuel Ajayi, who capitalised on some poor set-piece defending from United to fire home.
Ajayi’s defensive partner, Nobel Mendy, added to Hull’s advantage with a headed finish from a free-kick.

United’s best chance of the game fell to Bryan Mbeumo in the second half but the Cameroonian couldn’t beat Konstantinos Tzolakis, who thwarted him with a brilliant save.
Several United players simply weren’t up to the level expected of them, including Dorgu.

Dorgu’s display
Dorgu was preferred to Marcus Rashford at left wing, with Matheus Cunha deployed up front. It’s a selection call that simply didn’t pay off.
During the 45 minutes he was on the pitch before being hooked at half-time. Dorgu fired three shots, but none of them were on target or even troubled Tzolakis. He missed one big chance.
The Denmark international only made 10 passes, finding a teammate with eight of them (80% individual pass accuracy).
He touched the ball 20 times. Dorgu failed to complete the one dribble he embarked on and ceded possession back to the hosts on seven occasions.
The 21-year-old’s defensive contribution was negligible, with zero tackles, interceptions, or clearances recorded. His duel statistics were equally concerning. He lost all four ground duels and won only one of three aerial contests. Dorgu also committed four fouls.

The persistence in fielding Dorgu in an attacking role continues to invite scrutiny, with his performance against Hull doing little to justify the decision.
