Slovenia boss Bostjan Cesar has struck a reconciliatory tone with Manchester United over Benjamin Sesko after past tensions between the two parties.
Conflict
In March, Cesar publicly called out United, insisting he would not be pushed around regarding Sesko’s availability for the national team.
Sesko withdrew from international duty at the time in an effort to manage a fitness issue, during what was his maiden season at Old Trafford.
Cesar eventually allowed Sesko to skip Slovenia’s friendlies against Hungary and Montenegro but he was far from happy with United’s approach, as he made it clear that his medical staff would be the primary judges of Sesko’s condition in the future.
Cesar stressed that United would not be granted special treatment.
But he has seemingly changed tune on this occasion, hailing United’s handling of Sesko’s most recent injury, which he revealed was “quite serious.”
Sesko U-turn
Sesko has been named in Slovenia’s squad for the upcoming Nations League games against Scotland, North Macedonia and Switzerland.
Cesar told the media, “I’m very happy that he’s back in a competitive rhythm and the injury is finally repaired. I have spoken to him and I believe Benjamin Sesko will come to the camp.”
“I’ve been (aware of the) situation with his injury since March. It was quite a serious injury, and I think they handled it altogether in the right way to get him into the training process so slowly.”
He added, “For me as a coach, but also for all of us, for the whole of Slovenia, it is very important that Benjamin is now healthy and that he comes back to the national team after a long time.”
Sesko is already off the mark for the new season. He found the back of the net in subsequent games against Everton and Sabah FK.
He will be eager to start on Wednesday when United host Brighton & Hove Albion in the third round of the FA Cup.
