Dutch football legend Ruud Gullit has put his finger on the single biggest issue dragging Manchester United down, warning that AC Milan are suffering from the exact same ailment.
Champions League beckons
United are currently on the cusp of a sensational return to the Champions League, having beaten Chelsea 1-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
Matheus Cunha scored the only goal of the contest to draw United closer to qualifying for the continent’s most prestigious competition. The Red Devils sit in third place in the Premier League table, level on points with fourth-placed Aston Villa.
Michael Carrick and his players need just six points from their remaining five games to be mathematically qualified.
The additional revenue generated by Champions League participation will undoubtedly increase United’s summer spending power, enabling them to pursue higher-quality players. Furthermore, it will enhance the club’s attractiveness as a destination.
There is certainly plenty to look forward to as a fan, but Gullit believes that there is still a key flaw holding United back.
Gullit’s claim
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Gullit said that United, just like Milan, are still stuck in the past.
The 63-year-old told the newspaper, “Man United think too much of the past.”
“That’s the past. It’s like Milan. That’s the past, also.”
“You have to find a new way in order to come back. You have to be proactive.”
While United have not won the Premier League since 2013 when the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson retired, Milan lifted the Scudetto during the 2021/22 season.
Massimiliano Allegri’s side are also set to be in the Champions League next season. They’re currently second in Serie A.
United are next in action on Monday when they host Brentford at Old Trafford.
