Manchester United said goodbye to one of their most popular players in recent years this summer.
Casemiro departure
Casemiro arguably had his best season for the club, scoring nine goals in the league to help Manchester United finish in the Champions League places.
Nonetheless, both Casemiro and Manchester United decided that it was for the best not to continue their association.
The Brazilian was linked to numerous clubs, but it was revealed last month that he would sign a contract with David Beckham-owned Inter Miami.
The MLS side officially announced the transfer yesterday, with Casemiro on holiday after Brazil’s elimination from the World Cup.
Controversy
According to The Athletic, the deal is not without controversy, however.
The American outlet reports that the MLS is “investigating Inter Miami over allegations of tampering.”
Rules for signing international stars are complex in the league, and “Inter Miami is accused of tampering for allegedly circumventing the ‘discovery rights’ in MLS.”
Teams can put up to six players on their discovery lists, and in this particular case, “the LA Galaxy had Casemiro’s discovery rights, meaning no other MLS team could make contact with the player while they were in negotiations.”
Consequently, the league is investigating the Galaxy’s claim that Inter Miami circumvented the rule.
The Galaxy were in negotiations with Casemiro and reportedly felt confident of a deal before the Brazil international expressed his desire to join Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami.
Generally speaking, these issues are often resolved financially, with discovery rights being “traded for a more standard $50,000 GAM fee, but if rights-holding teams make a genuine attempt to sign that player, a slightly larger fee can be negotiated.”
Compensation has been reached between the Galaxy and Miami, but there is still a possibility that Casemiro’s new team will be sanctioned over the move.
