Man United’s travelling party for Atletico Madrid tie sees surprise changes

Manchester United have named their travelling squad for their pre-season friendly against Atletico Madrid on Saturday.

Fans can finally catch a glimpse of Amad, who recently re-joined training, while Altay Bayindir also finds a place in the squad despite his agent pushing for an exit.

Unfortunately, the United faithful will have to wait longer to see new recruit Youri Tielemans in action, with the Belgian remaining at Carrington.

Senne Lammens also did not make the trip, alongside Benjamin Sesko, who is yet to recover from last season’s knock.

Surprise omissions

Head coach Michael Carrick has opted to take a smaller group to Stockholm, with several academy graduates missing out this time around.

Toby Collyer, Dan Gore, Jacob Devaney and Chido Obi dropped out of the squad, and this indicates their immediate futures lie away from the club.

Both Collyer and Gore are likely to leave permanently, while the remaining two could leave on loan. Devaney will be disappointed considering his impressive performances so far this pre-season.

JJ Gabriel retains his place in the travelling party, and hopefully, the 15-year-old can finally make his debut at the Strawberry Arena.

Challenges set to get harder for United from hereon in

This will be a good test for the Red Devils against last season’s Champions League semi-finalists, ahead of United’s return to the continental competition.

The ties are only going to get harder from here on in, with Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain up next.

The 20-time English league champions are set for a training camp in Dublin, before taking on arch-rivals Leeds United at Croke Park.

Carrick is set to welcome back all his heavy-hitters by then, which means preparations for the upcoming season will start to ramp up.

United’s final pre-season encounter will see them take on AC Milan, a game that has taken on added significance following Ruben Amorim’s move there.
