At the start of June, Omar Berrada said of Manchester United’s transfer plans:
“In some cases, we can decide to make an investment knowing that it’s the right thing to do not only for the next two or three years, but also for the next ten years.”
Well, after reading those comments and the revelations that United are exploring a potential move for Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall, it is easy to argue that he is surely the kind of player the United chief executive officer was referring to.
Lewis Hall is a special player
Hall would be a transformative signing for United, one they have arguably not made since signing Bruno Fernandes.
The Red Devils rarely target players like him: young, at just twenty-one years old, and already proven quality, tried and tested in the Premier League.
Watching the Chelsea academy graduate last season, it was clear he proved to be a massive hit.
Signing him would mean United acquiring not only one of the best left-backs in his age group, but also a player with the potential to become world-class and command United’s left wing for the next decade.
The deal will be costly
All that said, while we know how revolutionary Hall could be for this United side, one thing is obvious: he will not come cheap.
£70 million has always been the price murmured for Lewis Hall, and truthfully, I think United would find that worth every penny if they are to stand by what Berrada said, despite being keen not to overspend this summer.
Shaw’s succession plan
Luke Shaw desperately needs a deputy at left-back, and Hall can be that man.
He can join and allow the 20-time English champions to phase out the veteran while gradually introducing him.
As world-class as Shaw is, surely only a world-class replacement deserves to fill his shoes, and in this instance, there are not many better than Hall.
