JJ Gabriel wrote his name in Manchester United’s history books with his appearances in the comeback pre-season victory against Atletico Madrid.

Turnaround

United headed into their meeting with Atletico with confidence, looking to build on their match fitness after last week’s 5-0 win over Rosenborg.

Once again, Michael Carrick named a strong team, with Shea Lacey the only academy player in it. Atletico took the lead in the fifth minute through Arnau Ortiz.

United responded emphatically, establishing themselves as the superior side with a firm grip on possession and a steady stream of opportunities. Luke Shaw and Leny Yoro each had multiple chances to restore parity but they couldn’t quite hit the target.

The closest United came in the first half was when Lacey beat his man before delivering a dangerous ball to Bryan Mbeumo, who connected with it, only to drag his header wide.

United finally got their reward shortly after the restart, when Lacey won a penalty. Mbeumo made no mistake from the spot-kick, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.

The Cameroonian completed the comeback in the 74th minute, tapping in a cross from Jack Fletcher after his first attempt was denied.

With the game won, Carrick made changes, including bringing on Gabriel for his much-awaited debut.

History maker

When Gabriel came on, he was greeted with thunderous applause from the United fans who had made the trip to the Strawberry Arena.

It seems remarkable that a 15-year-old’s senior debut could generate such fervent anticipation, yet the collective exhale when he entered the fray was tangible.

Few, if any, prospects within United’s youth ranks are attracting as much attention as Gabriel. His outstanding 2025/26 academy season has prompted suggestions that, were it not for age-related limitations, a senior debut would already have materialised.

His first action after being introduced against Atlético was to win a free-kick, as a desperate defender went through him in an attempt to win the ball. His second was a fine piece of control and a brief dribble that drew even more excited reactions from the crowd.

He also linked up nicely with Leny Yoro in a sharp give-and-go—but the move was eventually shut down.

Gabriel has etched his name into the record books, becoming the youngest player in United’s history to feature for the senior side.

It’s certainly the first of many appearances in his hugely promising career.
