Manchester United talent Shea Lacey produced a dazzling performance in the win over Atletico Madrid, giving Michael Carrick and his coaching staff food for thought ahead of the start of the new season.
Comeback triumph
United came from behind to beat Diego Simeone’s men 2-1 at the Strawberry Arena in Stockholm, Sweden.
Arnau Ortiz opened the scoring for Atletico in fortuitous fashion, as a free-kick delivery somehow bypassed every player in the box and nestled beyond the reach of Tom Heaton
But United didn’t panic, and asserted their control over the game, dominating possession and fashioning chances. Leny Yoro came close a few times during set-piece routines, but he couldn’t quite direct his efforts on target.
Luke Shaw also tested Jan Oblak with three powerful shots, but was thwarted on each occasion. Bryan Mbeumo came the closest when he shook off his marker to get on the end of a dangerous cross from Lacey, but Oblak was on hand to also deny him.

United’s persistence paid off shortly after the interval, with Lacey earning a penalty. The Carrington academy graduate displayed exquisite footwork and pace before being upended.

Mbeumo made no mistake from the spot-kick, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way. Mbeumo sealed the turnaround in the 74th minute, converting Jack Fletcher’s cross at the second attempt after his initial effort was kept out.

There were several standout performers, including Lacey.
Lacey’s display
Lacey was sensational in the previous outing, a 5-0 demolition of Rosenborg. He followed that up with another fine performance against Atletico.
The 19-year-old was flawless with his crossing, locating his intended target on each occasion, and recorded 30 touches over the course of his appearance.
Lacey contributed seven ball recoveries and four passes into the final third.
He attempted three take-ons, successfully completing two of them. He registered two touches inside the box and of course won the penalty for his side.

Lacey is certainly building a strong argument for a place in United’s starting lineup when the competitive campaign begins, or at the very least, a prominent role within the first-team setup.
