Coleen Rooney has reportedly reached a major decision over the future of her son Kai’s Manchester United career.
On the rise
Kai has steadily ascended through United’s youth ranks and is widely considered among the most promising talents currently in the club’s academy.
He initially joined United’s academy in 2016, then aged seven, before sealing a switch to cross-town rivals Manchester City.
Kai and his family moved to the United States when his dad, Wayne Rooney, signed for DC United in MLS in 2018, before returning to Carrington in 2020.
Last month, Kai was one of several United youngsters who put pen to paper on their first-year scholarship contracts and subsequently joined United’s Professional Development Phase.
A scholarship agreement permits academy players to pursue full-time development and marks the final stage before a player becomes eligible to sign professional terms, which can be formalised from the age of 17.
Kai’s 2025/26 season was disrupted by injuries, which limited him to six appearances in the Under-18 Premier League. He also featured in the FA Youth Cup. A source close to Coleen told Heatworld that she has decided to take a more hands-on approach with her son’s career, aiming to protect him from the limelight and disruptive external influences.
Coleen’s call
Coleen and Rooney have been together since they were teenagers, and she remained a central presence throughout his rapid ascent in English football, both at club level and for the national team, capturing the public’s imagination along the way.
She is intimately familiar with the potential pitfalls of a young professional’s career and is adopting a cautious approach when it comes to Kai.
“Kai has just signed a professional contract with Man United, so Coleen’s going to be helping with deals and media appearances.”
“Coleen knows there’ll always be people who will call her boys nepo babies, but she doesn’t care. She’s brought them up to work hard and make the most of the opportunities that come their way – which is what a good mum should do.”
“Coleen is ready to be a full-on momager. She wants to use her and Wayne’s experiences to make sure all the boys are successful in what they want to do. While Wayne is the one with the football knowledge and everything that involves, Coleen is the one who’s been working on the business side of things – all four boys have shown an interest in being in the public eye.”
The source said, “Coleen has seen how things can go wrong when people become famous too young and too fast, which is what happened with Wayne, and it’s even harder now with social media. Everyone has a phone to take pictures now, so her boys need her protection.”
It was made clear that Coleen’s focus is solely on agreements that will ultimately prove advantageous for her son and her family.
