Manchester United are reportedly poised to make a major announcement involving academy coach Adam Lawrence.
United return
Lawrence returned to United last season and took charge of the Under-21s following Travis Binnion’s promotion to the first team to assist Michael Carrick.
Binnion, who oversaw the Under-21s, initially joined Darren Fletcher for the brief period he managed United in the immediate aftermath of Ruben Amorim’s sacking.
When Carrick was brought on as an interim, he opted to keep Binnion as part of his backroom staff. It’s understood that Binnion has proven to be very popular with the senior players, many of whom have publicly spoken very positively about his influence on the training ground.
Binnion will carry on serving in his first-team role. Lawrence had left Newcastle and sealed a sensational return to United, seven months after he vacated his role as manager of the Under-18s.
Under Lawrence, the Under-21s made it to the play-off final of Premier League 2, suffering a narrow defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion.
In June, a report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United were in talks to extend Lawrence’s stay.
Now, Steven Railston of the Manchester Evening News has revealed that an official announcement is imminent.
Major announcement
Railston writes, “United opened talks to make his stay permanent at the end of the campaign, but there has been no public announcement from the club two months on, despite Lawrence returning to manage the U21s this summer.”
“The 40-year-old has overseen pre-season, and it’s understood that a formal announcement is still on track, despite the delay.”
“Lawrence’s previous experience of working at Carrington was seen as key ahead of his interim appointment.”
The report notes that United’s decision-makers consider Lawrence’s contribution during the latter half of last season to have been a success.
Meanwhile, Carrick and his players are next in action on Saturday when they face Paris Saint-Germain.
