Jorge Salinas: Atletico Madrid ready to plunge Man United’s transfer plans into disarray

Atletico Madrid are looking to spoil Manchester United’s left-back transfer plans if reports about Racing Santander’s left-back Jorge Salinas are accurate.

A left-back signing is expected to crown United’s brilliant summer 2026 window.

Having promised a midfield rebuild this window, INEOS have pulled out all the stops to ensure that happens.

With Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba, the 20-time English champions have assembled a title-challenging engine room.

The missing piece

However, as good as this Man United team is, the suggestion is that they are one left-back signing away from being at their absolute best.

Luke Shaw, as good as he is and as reliable as he proved to be last season, needs someone who can compete with him for the position to get the best out of it.

With Patrick Dorgu set for a left-winger role and Harry Amass expected to leave, a left-back signing is needed.

Lewis Hall was the dream target, but it looks like he will be staying at St James’ Park.

Jorge Salinas an interesting Hall alternative

Alternatives have therefore been considered, and one interesting option is Jorge Salinas.

Salinas is one of the most exciting up-and-coming left-backs in Spanish football.

His aggressive one-v-one defending, composed ball control, and ability to push forward in attack have left many impressed. The Old Trafford chiefs see him as a capable option to bolster their left-back position.

While Barcelona initially emerged as the Red Devils’ biggest threat in this pursuit, it now appears the Spanish champions are not the main rivals in this race.

Instead, as per Teamtalk, it is Atletico Madrid who INEOS need to watch out for:

“Atletico Madrid are pushing to get a deal done for Racing Santander defender Jorge Salinas

“The Madrid club are keen for him to come into their first-team squad and have been accelerating talks over the last month after allowing Matteo Ruggeri to leave for Aston Villa.” Atleti’s hard push is certainly not good news for Manchester United’s chances.

Salinas has the final say

INEOS will also need to put some effort into this deal. Yes, the young full-back is available for his £13.7 million release clause.

Yet it is not as simple as merely going ahead and paying that. A move can only happen if Salinas is convinced by it.

United need to convince the 19-year-old that the best next step in his career lies at M16.

Once he is convinced about the move, the release clause can then be activated, and the race for his signature will have been won.

The Peoples Person Reliability Assessment

Overall credibility: 8/10
Why?

✅ Claims echo reports in Spain making the same assertion

✅ The race remains open, with Salinas having the last say

⚠️ There is no indication that an offer has been submitted to Racing Santander over a transfer

TPP View

We believe the pursuit of Salinas, as exciting a prospect as he is, was always destined to be competitive. With a release clause in place, the final decision rests squarely on who he chooses.
