Newcastle United are pulling out all the stops to fend off Manchester United’s interest in Lewis Hall, despite the 21-year-old starlet being open to a switch to Old Trafford, according to the latest reports.
Theatre of Dreams
While a midfield overhaul has been the priority this summer, Manchester United are now ramping up efforts to sign a new left-back before the transfer window slams shut on 1 September.
Competition for Luke Shaw, who started every Premier League match last season, is considered essential as the 31-year-old Englishman’s injury record makes a repeat of this feat virtually impossible once midweek fixtures return.
A combination of no European football and early exits from the Carabao Cup and FA Cup meant the Red Devils played just 40 games last year. Champions League qualification means this total will reach at least 48 – with the expectation of much more with deeper runs domestically and on the continent.
Having established himself as one of the best young left-backs in Europe since joining Newcastle from Chelsea in 2023, Hall is the prime target. The England international would offer significantly more attacking threat than Shaw, while raising the technical floor of Michael Carrick’s side.
Lewis Hall Stats: 2025/26 Season
| Competition | Appearances | Starts | Goals | Assists | Yellow Cards | Second Yellow Cards | Red Cards | Minutes Played |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Premier League | 30 | 24 | 1 | 1 | 5 | - | - | 2,180' |
| UEFA Champions League | 10 | 6 | - | 1 | - | - | - | 648' |
| FA Cup | 3 | 2 | - | - | - | - | - | 231' |
| EFL Cup | 3 | 3 | - | - | - | - | - | 196' |
| Premier League 2 | 1 | 1 | - | - | 1 | - | - | 90' |
| Total | 47 | 36 | 1 | 2 | 6 | - | - | 3,345' |
Crucially, the Slough native is understood to be keen on swapping Tyneside for Manchester, with Champions League football a significant factor. Andy Mitten confirms INEOS believe Hall wants the move.
However, Newcastle are resolute in their stance: he is not for sale. The big-money departures of Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and, in particular, Bruno Guimaraes have darkened the mood at St James’ Park.
The arrival of the untested Matthias Jaissle from the Saudi Pro League to replace Eddie Howe has done little to assuage this, meaning the North East side are loath to lose yet another key player this summer – especially to a direct rival.
Newcastle rule out a sale
As a result of Manchester United’s interest in Hall, Newcastle have now opened talks with their defender’s representatives over a new contract. His current deal does not expire until 2029, suggesting the purpose of fresh terms is to ward off his suitors.
Journalist Sam Cohen reveals the Magpies are willing to table “improved terms”, while offering Hall a role in Jaissle’s leadership team – a significant gambit for a player so young.

Cohen reiterates that Newcastle have informed Manchester United Hall is “not for sale”. Fellow GIVEMSPORT reporter Ben Jacobs claims it would require a record-breaking fee for a full-back to change this stance, judging the likelihood of a move being “under 10%” at this stage of the window.

Overall credibility: 8/10
Why?
Manchester United’s interest in a new left-back – and specifically Lewis Hall – has been widely reported.
Newcastle United’s stance on Hall not being for sale is also well established, particularly after the loss of other key stars.
The decision to open talks over a new deal is the most effective way to end any speculation of Hall leaving St James’ Park.
Sam Cohen is not the most reputable source for transfer news.
TPP view:
We strongly believe Newcastle want to end Manchester United’s pursuit of Hall, but would advise waiting for a tier 1 source to confirm contract talks are underway.
