Manchester United boss Michael Carrick has provided an exciting transfer hint after masterminding his side’s 5-2 win over Ipswich Town.

Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick to steer United to a commanding 5-2 victory over Ipswich.
Leif Davis shocked the Old Trafford crowd when he put the visitors ahead as he rifled an effort into the top net, well past the reach of Senne Lammens.
United responded before the break. Matheus Cunha took advantage of a slip in the middle of the pitch by Marcelino Nunez to set up Fernandes, who made no mistake to restore parity.
The Red Devils surged ahead through a Jacob Greaves own goal. VAR had a look and judged that Harry Maguire’s handball in the build-up was of no consequence.
Fernandes got his second of the game from the spot-kick after Cunha was judged to have been cynically brought down inside the box. The United playmaker then completed his hat-trick with a cheeky finish before assisting Bryan Mbeumo for the fifth.

Carrick spoke to reporters after the final whistle and gave his verdict on the result, some individual performances and the possibility of some late business.

Asked about the win, Carrick said, “Just a week in football, isn’t it? I think the ups and downs. The bigges pleasing thing for me was…and we spoke about it during the week – dealing with setbacks.”
“If you want to be a good team and a successful team…every team gets beaten but you’ve got to deal with setbacks. Whether that’s the momentum in the game, a goal in the game, losing a game or running the game, whatever that may be, you have to deal with the setback and we spoke about that before the game, to try and overcome last week.”
“And then we took a mini-setback, going a goal behind but I think we showed the stubbornness a little bit, the belief, the confidence and the togetherness the boys showed at that stage.”
“That was really pleasing for me, to be honest – the way they bounced back and put in a performance like we did. That’s probably the biggest thing to take. There’s a lot of highlights and a lot of good football, but that mentality was what we really relied on today.”

Carrick was asked about Kobbie Mainoo’s performance.
The United manager was full of praise for the youngster, branding his performance “immense” and highlighting the significance of his return to the starting line-up. He acknowledged that Fernandes may dominate the post-match coverage, but insisted Mainoo had been the bedrock of the team’s display.
Carrick highlighted Fernandes’ importance to the supporters and his leadership qualities in both the dressing room and on the pitch, pointing to the comeback win over Ipswich as the perfect example.
Asked whether he is surprised that Fernandes’ leadership credentials are occasionally questioned in the media, Carrick replied, “It doesn’t surprise me. That’s the kind of thing that gets laid bare when you lose games. I said it last week – just cause you lose a game, it doesn’t mean that everything is wrong, or all the wheels have come off, or they don’t want to play, or they’re not passionate, or they’re not leaders.”
“Again, talking about setbacks. The best teams bounce back and to be fair, since we’ve been here, the boys have bounced back particularly well from different setbacks and that sets a good standard moving forward.”
Carrick was pressed on Marcus Rashford’s return to the starting XI, and praised the forward’s contributions, explaining that he was a threat throughout the game and clearly enjoyed being back in front of the Old Trafford faithful.
Carrick added, “He is really well-integrated into the team and contributes a lot. He wasn’t here when I arrived, but I think he is exactly the type of player we need in our squad.”
“There’s players that come back or that were gonna leave and didn’t leave, it was great to see him on the pitch today.”
“He’s one of us.”
Asked whether he is keen on a late signing before the close of the transfer window, Carrick replied, “Always difficult to say with so little time left.”

“In the situation that we’re in and the business that we’ve managed to do, I’m pleased with. I think we’re a better group and a better squad. Potentially a better team.”
“Add Marcus to that, he feels like a new signing. In that respect we’re quite happy. Always looking to add so wouldn’t shut it down but as it stands, we have to wait and see.”
United are next in action next Sunday when they go away to Everton.
