Manchester United have taken a major step forward this season.
Improvement
After finishing in an embarrassing 15th place last season under Ruben Amorim, they now find themselves in third place the following April.
The four summer signings of Benjamin Sesko, Senne Lammens, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have all been major contributors to the first team this season and have significantly improved the attacking and goalkeeping departments.
The managerial switch to Michael Carrick has also led to a significant upturn in results, and with just seven games left to play, the club is very much in control of its own destiny for Champions League football.
Praise from David de Gea
This has not gone unnoticed by former goalkeeper David de Gea, who played 545 matches over 12 seasons for the club.
With such a mammoth total of games, he is seventh on the all-time appearance list and is the non-British player with the most appearances for the club.
De Gea left the side in 2023 when his contract expired and, after taking a year out of football, returned to Fiorentina, where he is now in his second season at the club.
Speaking after the club’s humbling 0-3 loss to Crystal Palace in the Conference League, De Gea was asked about his former club on TNT Sports.
Commenting after the match, he praised the work of his former teammate, Michael Carrick.
Smiling, he said, “yeah, he’s doing unbelievable. He’s a great guy, he knows how the players feel. So it is easy to talk to him and he’s doing an amazing job.”
Reflecting on the club’s season, he said, “United is winning a lot of games now and playing well. Hopefully they can get the Champions League spot and keep growing and growing and we can see United in the high positions and fighting for trophies.”
The Red Devils will next be in action after a lengthy break when they face Leeds United on Monday, 13th April.
