Michael Farrell: Another blow for Manchester United as key character behind the scenes jumps ship

by Alex Browne

When Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS bought a minority stake in Manchester United in 2023, supporters were promised that the ‘best in class’ would arrive.

Issues

Omar Berrada was appointed as CEO, and Jason Wilcox eventually became director of football after Dan Ashworth’s short but turbulent spell at the club.

There was also massive restructuring across the board, with huge swathes of staff numbers cut to make the business leaner and more efficient.

Nonetheless, almost three years later, fans are left questioning whether INEOS really achieved anything like what they set out to do.

With the club having only won two of their opening six matches in all competitions, fan pressure is already increasing.

What’s more, there is pressure on Michael Carrick’s position, and Jason Wilcox’s recruitment is also being criticised as supporters have been left clueless as to why a struggling defence was not addressed at all this summer.

The youth department has also come under fire, as academy gem JJ Gabriel has fallen out with the club and it seems he is on his way out in the near future.

More departures

Journalist Sully has reported that there has been more upheaval behind the scenes.

It has been reported that United’s “Head of Football Culture & Development, Michael Farrell, decided to leave this summer.”

He continued, Farrell “was promoted to the role last year and had been working on improving the culture of the club internally. The role has now been spread amongst existing staff.”

The atmosphere in the dressing room and club was seen to be on the up last year, as a wonderful second half of the season saw the Reds secure third and Champions League football for this season.

Nonetheless, the mood has apparently dipped quite quickly as United’s performances and results continue to plummet this season.
