Manchester United have made one of their worst starts to a season in the Premier League era under Michael Carrick.
With five points from five games, this is United’s joint-lowest tally after five matches of a Premier League season. Furthermore, they have also been knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Brighton & Hove Albion.
Given the flurry of statistics highlighting United players’ lack of running and intensity, one might conclude they are no longer making an effort for the man in charge. However, a report has now detailed what the Red Devils really think about Carrick.
How dressing room feels about Michael Carrick
According to The Sun, Michael Carrick retains the backing of the Manchester United dressing room.
The report states: “Supporters threatened to turn against Carrick when they booed his decision to substitute Kobbie Mainoo at Fulham, though the players are not for turning (yet).”
It is understood the players privately accept much of the responsibility for United’s poor start to the season, which has seen them win just twice across all competitions so far.
“We need to turn it around,” a dressing room source said.
“Insiders add that the draw at Everton in United’s third fixture was considered a missed opportunity by the United squad,” the report adds.
The outing on Merseyside was regarded as a game to back up their 5-2 defeat of Ipswich Town the previous week. However, they conceded a 95th-minute equaliser and dropped two points, thanks to their nervous defending.
Antonio Conte linked with Manchester United job
Meanwhile, reports in Italy suggest the club’s hierarchy are starting to doubt Carrick’s suitability to lead United.
It is suggested United have made initial contact to assess Antonio Conte’s availability.
The Italian, who is without a club following his departure from Napoli, is thought to be in pole position to take over the helm should United sack Carrick.
