Michael Carrick was visibly emotional during his pre-match press conference on Friday.
Carrick will lead Manchester United against Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday.
However, given the way his side have been performing in recent weeks and the manner in which players such as Lisandro Martinez and Bruno Fernandes have publicly criticised the club’s hierarchy and the head coach’s tactics, a major change appears to be inevitable.
Manchester United eyeing Julian Nagelsmann
According to The Telegraph, pressure is mounting on Michael Carrick, with Manchester United already considering their options if they are forced to make a change.
It is understood that former Germany and Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann will be a leading candidate to replace Carrick at United.
Eddie Howe, who left Newcastle United in the summer, would also be high on the club’s shortlist due to his Premier League experience.
Aston Villa’s Unai Emery, Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler, and Antonio Conte also have admirers either at United or among figures connected to the club.
Man United manager contenders wary of dressing room unrest
It is claimed that “more than one of the candidates to potentially replace Carrick at United believe one of the biggest priorities would be to bring the dressing room into line.”
A source close to one of United’s managerial candidates said: “It’s clear they need order and discipline. The dressing room is out of control and that is the first thing to fix.”
Nagelsmann, who is out of work and immediately available, would listen to an approach if a change is made at Old Trafford.
However, the 39-year-old German tactician would want “assurances over the structure above him, having pulled out of the running for the Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea jobs in the past over that issue.”
A separate report has suggested the club’s director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, favours Nagelsmann, while Wilcox prefers Howe.
