Manchester United’s goal is to finally bring the Premier League title back to Old Trafford in 2028.
As they pursue that ambition, INEOS is now attempting to assemble a super team.
In 2025, the focus was on strengthening the attack; this year, the midfield has taken centre stage; and next year, the Red Devils are expected to overhaul their defence. After these “rebuild”, they should have a strong enough squad to challenge for league glory.
Which defenders Manchester United are targeting
There are already indications about which defenders they could target to strengthen their backline.
Adrien Truffert and Tyrick Mitchell are being linked as left-back options, with Luke Shaw expected to be replaced.
A centre-back signing is also anticipated, and Fussball reports that INEOS could move for long-term centre-back target Castello Lukeba.
Lukeba update
The German outlet reports that United are continuing to closely monitor Lukeba’s development, with discussions taking place through intermediaries and representatives.
However, as impressive a defender as Lukeba is, United are not alone in this race, facing a challenging battle with Barcelona, Chelsea and Arsenal.
That said, Leipzig are anticipating approaches for their star centre-back, with Fussball noting their “current asking price is around 60 million euros plus bonuses. The total package could therefore rise to between 60 and 65 million euros.”
Lukeba could lead Manchester United’s defensive rebuild
At £56 million, Lukeba would represent a bargain, considering he previously had a £69 million release clause. INEOS should therefore move quickly to secure his signature.
If United win this fierce transfer battle, it would be a signing of intent for INEOS’ defensive rebuild.
Lukeba, alongside a top left-back signing, could solidify the Red Devils’ left-hand side, injecting the athleticism that sometimes appears to be lacking with Shaw and Lisandro Martínez.
