Manchester United are still searching for their ideal Casemiro replacement after failing to land three of their top targets.
Ederson has already been signed, on Casemiro’s recommendation, and while the Brazilian can operate as a deep-lying playmaker, he is more adept as a box-to-box midfielder.
Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali were identified as the perfect Premier League-proven options, but the Red Devils were priced out of moves for both.
INEOS were forced to alter their approach, and the creative Mateus Fernandes emerged as their next best bet. Unfortunately, Tottenham Hotspur have won that race on the strength of their enormous offer.
United’s misfiring midfield search
Bournemouth’s Alex Scott and Tyler Adams are among the other names under consideration, while the 20-time English league champions are also keeping tabs on Bruno Guimaraes of Newcastle.
The 28-year-old, who is partnering Casemiro in the middle of the park for Brazil at the World Cup, has only two years left on his current deal and would be an astute purchase.
Michael Carrick would love a player like Bruno Guimaraes, who brings a perfect blend of steel and silk to the base of the midfield.
Arsenal are reportedly frontrunners, with £65 million reportedly being the magic number to prise him away from St. James’ Park.
Bruno Guimaraes would be a dream signing
However, having lost both Tonali and Anthony Gordon this summer, the Magpies are keen not to lose their captain as well.
Football Insider have claimed that Eddie Howe’s side are preparing a bumper contract offer for the Brazil international in order to keep him at Tyneside for a few more years at least.
“Newcastle United are planning to tie star midfielder Bruno Guimaraes down to a new contract, sources have told Football Insider.
“Sources have now indicated that they are ready to make “bumper new contract” offer to try to keep the former Lyon man at St James’ Park for several more years.
Newcastle desperate not to lose their skipper
“Guimaraes’ current deal on Tyneside has just two years left to run, which is potentially set to present a difficult situation for the club next summer. With Tonali seemingly heading for the exit door, the club are determined to keep hold of their other influential figure in Guimaraes.”
Whether United pursue Bruno Guimaraes or opt for younger alternatives remains to be seen. INEOS also have Aurelien Tchouameni and Ayyoub Bouaddi on their radar, with Michael Carrick desperate for three new additions to the team’s engine room.
