Manchester United are reportedly weighing up a swoop for Freiburg’s Igor Matanovic amidst uncertainty over Joshua Zirkzee’s future
Exit on the cards
There remains a solid chance that Zirkzee will leave United before the close of the summer transfer window.
Zirkzee struggled for playing time last season under both Ruben Amorim and Michael Carrick. At times, even Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha were preferred up front to him.
The Dutchman is desperate for regular minutes, which is far from guaranteed at Old Trafford.
At the moment, the strongest interest in Zirkzee seems to be coming from Juventus. A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that there have been some discussions between United and Juventus regarding a transfer.
If Zirkzee leaves, he will almost certainly need to be replaced. According to CaughtOffside, Matanovic retains admirers at United after a superb Bundesliga campaign.
Enter the fray
CaughtOffside claim, “Manchester United are considering Freiburg forward Igor Matanović as Michael Carrick looks to ensure his attack has enough depth for the new season.”
“Sources close to the agents industry have informed CaughtOffside that Man United have discussed a potential move for Matanović internally.”
“Tottenham are also monitoring him, which could create competition if United decide to progress beyond preliminary discussions.”
Matanovic netted 11 goals and contributed an additional two assists in 31 Bundesliga appearances last season.
Across all competitions, the Croatian scored 15 goals.
To have reached these levels is a notable achievement and with the player still just 23 years old, there remains considerable scope for further development.
