Manchester United’s hierarchy are prepared to switch their focus to the side’s backline.
United’s defence lacks both numbers and quality, yet INEOS decided against reinforcing the area for the second summer running, overhauling the midfield instead. Furthermore, Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt, who were signed in 2024, are yet to show they can be relied upon for different reasons.
Michael Carrick has been left to deal with the mess, with his side failing to register a clean sheet in their first four Premier League matches. A report suggests United may consider bringing their plan to strengthen the area forward.
Manchester United contact Jarrad Branthwaite
According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United have renewed their interest in Everton central defender Jarrad Branthwaite.
It is claimed that contact has been made with the 24-year-old’s representatives, and United may consider a bid in January or the summer.
They may allegedly consider offering a player in return for Branthwaite, although “it remains to be seen if Everton would be open to letting him leave after banking in excess of £80m for Iliman Ndiaye and Beto this summer.”
Branthwaite has enjoyed a solid start to the new season under David Moyes, impressing with his pace and mobility.
United tried to sign the Everton defender in 2024 but saw their two offers rejected by the Merseyside outfit. They eventually agreed a deal with Bayern Munich for Matthijs de Ligt.
Manchester United’s backline is a mess
However, De Ligt has struggled with frequent injury issues in Manchester and has been out of action for nearly a year after back surgery. Lisandro Martínez has also seldom been available for a considerable string of games.
The Argentine defender and Harry Maguire will be out of contract next summer.
The report adds that “big changes are expected to the back four after this summer’s midfield rebuild and the new signings made in attack last year.”
Still, even if INEOS decide to make a move for Branthwaite in January, Everton are likely to rebuff any attempts before the end of the season. The England international signed a five-year deal with the Toffees in July 2025.
