Former Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has officially joined FC Porto, signing a contract for the remainder of the season.
The 36-year-old centre-back will wear the number six shirt and has promised to bring experience, leadership and a winning mentality to Francesco Farioli’s side.
Smalling’s move after leaving Al-Fayha
Smalling became available as a free agent following his departure from Saudi Arabian club Al-Fayha.
The former United man’s spell in the Middle East did not get off t the best of starts, scoring an own goal and being sent off on his debut. He ended up making 67 appearances for the Saudi side, scoring four goals.
Porto approach convinced Smalling
A Bola confirms that Smalling has signed a one-season contract with Porto. The English defender travelled directly from the airport to the Estádio do Dragão to undergo physical tests.
Smalling said: “I am very excited. I came straight from the airport to the stadium to do the physical tests and I was surrounded by all the trophies and could see the history of this club up close. To be able to become part of it now… I cannot wait to start training.”
He added: “He did his research, watched my games, and it simply made sense. After just 10 minutes of conversation, I knew this had to happen and it was done.”
Porto are defending their league title while also competing in the Champions League. Smalling believes his experience can help the squad maintain its standards across a demanding campaign.
“I am hungry for more and I come with a winning mentality,” he said. “My role is to help the team continue to evolve because it is already in great form.”
Chris Smalling’s United pedigree and Saudi connection
Smalling arrives in Portugal as a former Manchester United league winner, giving Porto an experienced defensive option accustomed to the demands surrounding a successful club.
His familiarity with Porto also extends beyond his time at Old Trafford. While playing in Riyadh, Smalling worked with former Porto defender and coach Pedro Emanuel, whose staff regularly watched the Portuguese club’s matches.
The Englishman said that connection meant Porto already felt somewhat familiar, while revealing that he expects to speak further with Emanuel about his new surroundings.
His message to Porto supporters was equally direct, with the defender promising that his appetite to compete would be evident in every training session and match.
