Jamie Redknapp has left Manchester United and Michael Carrick with plenty to ponder as he delivered a brutal assessment of the team’s performance in the 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur.

Frustrating

United’s dreadful start to the Premier League season continued as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Bryan Mbeumo gave United the lead in the 73rd minute with a well-taken finish. United were further boosted five minutes later when the visitors were reduced to 10 men after Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off for headbutting Luke Shaw.

However, United failed to see the game through, allowing Tottenham Hotspur to continue pressing them. Dominic Solanke outmuscled Lisandro Martinez to head home a cross from Sandro Tonali.

This result has left United languishing in 12th place, having collected just six points from their opening six matches. It is the club’s worst start in 40 years.

It does not get any easier for United, with a tough run of fixtures coming up, starting with Tuesday’s Champions League trip to Atletico Madrid.

Speaking to reporters after the final whistle, Michael Carrick admitted that United have fallen significantly short so far and that they urgently need to turn things around.

A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Carrick still retains the faith of the club’s hierarchy and there are currently no plans to make a change in the dugout.

Redknapp pulled no punches in his assessment of United’s lethargic display against Tottenham Hotspur.

Redknapp’s verdict

He said on Sky Sports [as quoted by The Standard], “Brighton in the Carabao Cup, 2-0 up and lose 3-2, that is unprecedented and does not happen at Old Trafford.”

“Except it does with this team.”

He added, “I do not see enough connections in that midfield and they look devoid of any confidence, ideas, or patterns of play, playing out the back and Tottenham were just much better than them in every department.”

“But that is just a theme this season.”

“Their energy levels are not good enough and they look loose going forward, there was no real structure. The squad is not good or strong enough and Michael [Carrick] needs help in that respect.”
