It is hard to understand what Manchester United’s plan for Diego León really is.
Signing some of the most exciting young talents around and hoping they will eventually break through has formed a central part of Ineos’s transfer strategy. Yet since the club began pursuing this approach, the curious reality is that none of these prospects has forced his way into the first-team plans.
Exciting talents failing to break out at Manchester United
Chido Obi, Sékou Koné and León are among the signings recruited for their clear quality, yet none has broken into this United side.
Meanwhile, players of similar repute, such as Arsenal’s Max Dowman and Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal, have used their talents to accelerate their development and push for regular first-team football.
At a time when United are enduring a left-back injury crisis, León should have been given the chance to step up and fill the gap if the club truly signed him for his talent.
Instead, he remains nowhere near the picture, and few United supporters have a clear sense of his progress.
Diego León worried about his development
His agent, Renato Bittar, has now spoken openly about the Paraguayan’s situation with the United under-21s, making some telling remarks.
“If there isn’t a plan to break into the first team between December and January, we’ll look for a way out for him. A loan somewhere where he can compete, get playing time, and return to Manchester,” he said via ABC Deportes.
“The Championship is an option, as are other European leagues, but we don’t want to leave here. He’s performing well with the U21 team, he’s training well, and his physical condition is excellent,” Bittar explained.
If the club cannot trust León with first-team minutes despite the current injury problems, it inevitably raises the question of whether he is good enough.
That, in turn, raises another awkward question: why did Ineos bother to sign him in the first place?
The issue may not even be his quality, but simply a lack of opportunity. Shea Lacey and Harry Amass have both shown they can put in a decent shift when called upon, yet the club keeps overlooking them.
Situations like these explain why JJ Gabriel’s camp and León’s representatives are now watching developments closely and issuing clear ultimatums.
