Yoro joined United as a teenager in 2024 in a reported £52 million deal, becoming the most expensive player below the age of 18 in history. The Frenchman drew parallels with his own experiences as he advised Gabriel, adding: “I can see myself.”

“[I would say] stay humble, just want to work, and this is what we need in the team, even for the young guys. They’re all doing really well, and JJ is one of them, so I hope he’s going to learn a lot, continue like that, improve, yeah. But he’s really good, a good player.”

Manchester United endured a shaky start to the 2024-25 season, and by midseason, qualification for Champions League football even looked unlikely.

However, a bold decision from INEOS to sack Ruben Amorim and salvage United’s season changed everything.

Carrick the difference maker

The United chiefs turned to Carrick to steady the ship, and he did far more than that. The former midfielder restored winning habits, and he had the team fighting and playing with real zeal and passion.

Ultimately, under Carrick, United looked like a proper team, a far cry from what Amorim had been working with.

Given the Red Devils’ resurgence, handing Carrick the job felt like the right call. Yet earning the job was only the first step; he then had to sell his ideas to the squad.

Looking at United’s transfer activity and pre-season performance, it is now clear how Carrick wants this team to play.

Carrick wants this United side to move away from relying on transitional football. Instead, his aim is for United to control games, dominate possession, and dictate matches.

Consequently, he is prioritising technicians over pure athletic profiles, and this is evident in United’s midfield rebuild.

Instead, United may well sign another technician, which raises the question: while many fans demanded the signing of Elliot Anderson, was he ever truly the type of midfielder this team needed?

Elliot Anderson: Manchester United dodged a bullet

Yes, Anderson’s elite defensive work rate, duel-winning ability, and constant movement are excellent qualities. Yet they suit teams chasing games, ones not necessarily keen on exerting control.

For a possession-based side, however, like United want to be, such qualities remain secondary to the composure, intelligent progression, and tempo-dictating control needed. Anderson is clearly not a “technical controller,” and this was evident given how little influence he and Declan Rice carried for England at the World Cup.

Indeed, Thomas Tuchel opted to capitalise on physicality rather than turn to technicians such as Kobbie Mainoo, who might otherwise have offered control and dominance.

Carrick, though, is showing a bold new approach with his squad. He wants technical controllers, and splashing over £100million on a player not suited to that vision would have been a significant blunder, one that could have genuinely held this United team back.

If INEOS fail to sign a backup striker once the Netherlands international leaves, the United head coach could be forced to play Mbeumo as the false nine in more and more games.

Joshua Zirkzee close to leaving

That would leave Amad and Shea Lacey as the only options on the right. On the left, Carrick currently has no specialist options.

Patrick Dorgu is continuing to excel there, while Matheus Cunha can also do a job out wide. A lot depends on Marcus Rashford’s future and whether Tynan Thompson can impress when given the chance.

A versatile wideman would be the ideal recruit, and the Red Devils have Francisco Conceicao on their radar.

The Juventus winger is primarily a right-winger, but can do a job out wide on the left and even down the middle.

Francisco Conceicao has emerged as an option

The Bianconeri have slapped a £43 million price tag on the Portuguese attacker’s head, but United could acquire him for a lot less.

Juve are keen to sign Joshua Zirkzee, and a swap deal opportunity is on the cards. According to Sport Mediaset, the Serie A giants are open to a player-plus-cash deal.

Such an arrangement would see United land Conceicao for £25 million, with the United forward heading to Turin.

“Francisco Conceição could leave Juventus after just two seasons. Having arrived in the summer of 2024 on loan from Porto, the Portuguese was bought by the Bianconeri last year for €30 million, effectively becoming a key player in the project, first under Tudor and then under Spalletti.

Swap deal arrangement

“At the moment, the team most interested in the Portuguese winger is the Red Devils, who are looking for a winger to bolster Michael Carrick’s attack.

“Juventus value Conceição between €50 and €60 million, a figure that could be lowered with the inclusion of a counterpart the Bianconeri appreciate. Obviously, we’re talking about Joshua Zirkzee, who is no longer central to the Manchester club’s project and would be happy to return to Italy.

“Manchester United could offer €30 million plus Zirkzee’s fee (also valued at the same price) to land the Portuguese winger.”

The entire swap deal arrangement is being overseen by super-agent Jorge Mendes. United could do a lot better than the Portugal international if they really desire a winger.

On paper, a direct sale would benefit United a lot more. Things will become clearer in the coming weeks.

“I’m fortunate to be able to play both positions, so it’s difficult to choose. I’ve had some really good performances on the right wing and also as a striker.

“I think I’m more experienced on the wing, so I’d probably say that. But I enjoy playing as a striker as well.”

Opening his account after three pre-season games also pleased the Avallon-born attacker.

“For an attacking player, it’s always a great feeling to score for the team and the fans. It’s also really good to provide assists. Seeing everyone happy — the supporters and my teammates — makes it a special feeling.”

Pre-season going according to plan

Victory over Rosenborg was not seen as a major achievement by critics, but the dominance shown by the Red Devils against Diego Simeone’s men will have sent out a clear message.

Bryan Mbeumo revealed that all the hard work being put in during training is paying off and that the head coach’s plan worked to perfection against the Spanish giants.

“We had a clear plan before the game, and everyone stuck to it. That made the game really enjoyable.

“We work really hard in training for games like this. The main goal is to be ready for the start of the season, and I think everyone has done an amazing job so far.”

Up next is a blockbuster tie against Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain. It will be interesting to see how the 20-time English league champions perform then and where the United No.19 plays.
