Manchester United talisman Bruno Fernandes has been in outstanding form once again this season but his expiring contract continues to raise concern among supporters. The Portuguese midfielder has entered the final year of his contract and is yet to sign a new deal.

Even the prospect of Fernandes leaving Old Trafford next summer is a worrying one for fans. The Red Devils’ skipper has been an influential figure on and off the pitch, and appears to have hit a higher gear in recent times.

Fernandes wrote his name in the record books last season by registering 21 assists in the Premier League, the most in a single campaign in the history of the competition. That has subsequently seen him sweep the Premier League Player of the Season, the FWA Player of the Year and the PFA Players’ Player of the Year awards.

The 31 year old also won a record fifth Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award last season, further etching his name into United folklore. Unfortunately, it has done little to allay concerns over his long-term future.

United adopting emergency measure

Fernandes started the season with a disappointing outing against Hull City, which United lost 2-0 at the MKM Stadium. However, the Portuguese was back to his best against Ipswich Town last weekend, scoring a hat-trick and setting up another in a blockbuster 5-2 win.

That has seen him win the Premier League Player of the Matchweek award, while also securing United’s Player of the Month for August. With the Portuguese showing no signs of slowing down, supporters are understandably delighted and hopeful for an eventful season.

However, fears over a possible departure will still linger among supporters. The United skipper was also a wanted man this summer, adding to the nervousness among fans, although the interest in his signature amounted to nothing.

A recent report from The Peoples Person suggests that the Red Devils are planning to trigger a one-year extension on Fernandes’ contract to give them some space to get the actual renewal across the line. A fresh update has now shed light on Fernandes’ stance on extending his stay at the Theatre of Dreams.

Fernandes keen to extend stay

According to Football Insider, Fernandes is keen to continue his association with United. The report states: “Man United will accelerate new contract talks with Bruno Fernandes this season as he remains keen to pen fresh terms, sources have told Football Insider.”

“United want to tie him down to a long-term contract in the coming months amid interest in his services from Turkey and Saudi Arabia.”

The report confirms that United are planning to trigger the one-year extension option in the player’s deal. Speaking on the Insider Transfer podcast, journalist Pete O’Rourke added: “They’ll be more than happy to sit down and discuss fresh terms with Fernandes, give him improved terms as well and extend his contract further, just to end any sort of ongoing speculation that he could be lured away from Old Trafford.”

“Fernandes is happy at Manchester United and they are obviously very happy with him as he consistently producing the goods for them. I think it’ll be a good move by United to tie him down to a new deal just to cement his long-term future at the club.”

Final Thoughts

Fernandes’ contract situation could become a distraction for United as the season progresses. Given the Portuguese’s importance to the team, INEOS must address the matter very soon.
