Michael Carrick and Manchester United set another unwanted record in their disappointing 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur.
Setbacks galore
United’s woeful start to the 2026/27 Premier League season continued on Saturday as they were held to a draw by Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.
Bryan Mbeumo gave United the lead in the 73rd minute with his third top-flight strike of the season. Things got even better for United moments later when Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off for planting a headbutt on Luke Shaw.
However, United were unable to make their numerical advantage count, as Dominic Solanke scored for Tottenham Hotspur in stoppage time to ensure the spoils were shared between the two struggling outfits.
United have now amassed just six points from their opening six games of the season. It is statistically the club’s worst start to a season in 40 years. The Red Devils managed four points in 1986/87 under Sir Alex Ferguson, who would go on to win 13 Premier League titles and cement his status as the greatest manager in the history of the sport.
Speaking to reporters after the final whistle, Carrick acknowledged that United are in a difficult period. He fired three demands to his players as he insisted they must quickly turn things around.
It will be far from straightforward for United, given their daunting schedule of upcoming fixtures, commencing with Tuesday’s Champions League trip to Atletico Madrid.
Carrick’s men will then take on old foes Leeds United at Elland Road and subsequently return to Europe with another away trip to Cesc Fabregas’ Como.
As the fallout from the disappointing draw with Tottenham Hotspur continues, it has emerged that Carrick and his players reached another unwanted milestone.
New low
Statisticians OptaJoe point out, “In 1-1 draws with Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United are the first side to play back-to-back Premier League games against sides starting the day bottom of the table and fail to win both since West Brom in December 2017.”

The hits just keep on coming for United, who just can’t seem to get anything right at the moment.
It is believed that Carrick still retains the backing of the football hierarchy, but things can undoubtedly change fast if results and performances do not improve.
